San Maurizio Knightly Sword: The Warrior’s Relic The San Maurizio Knightly Sword is a tribute to the iconic artifact attributed to Saint Maurice, the Roman soldier and Christian martyr. Saint Maurice is traditionally viewed as a commander of the Theban Legion, composed of Christian soldiers from Upper Egypt. This legion was stationed in Gaul to assist in quelling revolts. According to historical accounts, when ordered to perform pagan sacrifices, Maurice and his men refused, leading to their execution by decimation—a military punishment where every tenth soldier is killed. This act of defiance has made Maurice a symbol of Christian martyrdom and valor. The sword itself is believed to have been used in the execution of Saint Maurice, although it is recognized as a 13th-century weapon rather than a direct relic from his time. Initially kept in the Treasury of the Abbey of St. Maurice in Valois, Switzerland, it was transferred to the Royal Chapel at Turin in 1591 by Duke Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy, along with relics attributed to the saint. Since 1858, it has been displayed at the Armeria Reale (Royal Armory) in Turin. The sword is classified as an Oakeshott Type XII, recognized for its broad blade with a shallow fuller extending three-quarters of its length, making it a formidable weapon for cavalry use. It features a distinctive “Brazil nut” pommel (Oakeshott Form A) and a grip crafted from wood, wrapped in leather or parchment. Remarkably well-preserved, the sword retains an almost newly forged appearance, thanks to its careful storage in a finely crafted leather case dating back to 1434–1438. The original, cross-shaped leather case housing the sword is richly adorned with intricate decorations, including the heraldic arms of Savoy, Piedmont, and Genoa. It also bears a Latin inscription that translates to: “O good Maurice, defend your friends so that they may never fall into the snares of enemies,” reflecting the protective and symbolic significance of the artifact. The Sword of San Maurizio also holds a prominent place in European history. It served as part of the regalia used during Austro-Hungarian emperors’ coronations until 1916. Saint Maurice, as a revered patron saint for many rulers within the Holy Roman Empire, became a lasting symbol of military valor and steadfast Christian faith. This faithful blunt replica meticulously mirrors the artifact design, with its parallel profile taper, a massive blade fullered three-quarters of its length, the Brazil Nut pommel and the flared, sturdy crossguard. The accompanying scabbard is crafted following the same exact pattern of the original one, reflecting the construction techniques of the 13th century. The San Maurizio Knightly Sword embodies the rich history and spiritual significance of its original counterpart, offering the demanding reenactor, advanced practitioners of historical fencing, film productions and collectors a tangible connection to the rich legacy of Saint Maurice. Leather Grip Care: Keep your leather grip nourished with leather oil or grease, but remember— protective products will darken the shade over time. Rust Prevention: Promptly address any rust, as it can penetrate beneath the surface of the steel, causing damage. Storage Guidelines: Store your sword in a dry environment and away from damp gear. Damage Prevention: Always round nicks or dents with a flat file to prevent breakages.
