The Liutger Arming Sword draws inspiration from two iconic sources: Ewart Oakeshott’s renowned “Moonbrand,” celebrated as a masterpiece in his personal collection, and the medieval depictions of sword-and-buckler combat in the London Tower Fechtbuch MS I.33, dating to the first half of 14th century. The name Liutger derives from the its latinized form of Lutegerus, the presumed author of the manuscript. The Liutger presents a fullered wide blade, a curved crossguard and an extruded disc pommel that are meticulously proportioned to achieve agility and balance. A unique optional feature is the leather chappe at the crossguard, which enhances grip by accommodating the thumb, improving control during engagements. This manuscript, created around 1300 in Franconia, is significant for its detailed exposition of sword and buckler techniques, presented through a series of illustrated plays involving a master (the priest) and a student (the scholar).  The manuscript itself is notable for its combination of Latin text and German fencing terminology, indicating its educational purpose within a martial arts context. The MS I.33 manuscript, often considered the oldest known European fencing manual, outlines structured guards, such as “obsessio” (positions of opposition), and sequences of attacks and counters, showcasing the importance of timing, control, and adaptability in close-quarters combat. The Liutger Arming Sword is designed to complement these techniques, with its balance and versatility enabling precise execution of maneuvers like binding, thrusting, and deflecting. FEATURES: Lightweight and agile: Around 1 kg, it is designed to excel in sword-and-buckler techniques from MS I.33. Fullered blade: Enhances balance and reduces weight without compromising durability. Optional leather chape: Accommodates thumb placement for improved control and precision. Blunt edges, high flexibility, and thickened tip: Prioritizes safety in HEMA training and competition. Heat-treated blade: Ensures resilience and long-lasting durability. Dismountable design: Simplifies maintenance, transport, replacement and customization. Historical accuracy with modern updates: Inspired by Moonbrand and MS I.33, tailored specifically for HEMA and historical fencing. The Liutger Arming Sword is ideal for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), historical fencing, stage fencing, and film productions. With its refined design and thoughtful proportions, it bridges historical tradition with practical performance, offering fencers a versatile instrument for mastering medieval swordplay. CARE TIPS Blade and Hilt Maintenance: After use, always clean the blade, pommel, and crossguard with oils like Gunex or WD40. Grip Care: Avoid applying oil to a cord grip. Instead, gently clean it by rubbing with a cloth soaked in a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Leather Grip Care: Keep your leather grip nourished with leather oil or grease, but remember— protective products will darken the shade over time. Rust Prevention: Promptly address any rust, as it can penetrate beneath the surface of the steel, causing damage. Storage Guidelines: Store your sword in a dry environment and away from damp gear. Damage Prevention: Always round nicks or dents with a flat file to prevent breakages.
